Who is she?

Melanie is a fiber artist based in Baltimore, Maryland. She weaves natural materials into abstract, wall-mounted sculptures, creating playful worlds of lush color and texture that speak to her experience of emotions and relationships. Drawing on figures from nature, the human body, and architecture, her textiles depict emotions, giving form to otherwise shapeless feelings.

Melanie grew up in Rochester, NY surrounded by women who practiced fiber crafts, including quilting, knitting, crochet, and embroidery. She began to follow in their footsteps at a young age and studied drawing and painting throughout high school. Despite a thriving career in graphic design, Melanie felt pulled to weaving, fell in love with a committed artistic practice, and transitioned to working as a full-time fiber artist in 2024.

Expressing her worldview, Melanie’s fiber art is formed through personal lenses of family trauma, queerness, womanhood, sexuality, psychotherapy, myth, and magic. She intentionally eschews any direct symbolism, however these ideas are intrinsic to her work. Embracing mystery, Melanie enables free articulation of her lived experience and leaves interpretation open to the viewer.

Melanie uses fiber art to process feelings and experiences which deepen her relationship with herself. Outlining shapes synesthetically and allowing somatic responses to lead her to colors and texture, she makes the intangible tangible. combining bright, otherworldly colors with natural earth tones to convey the breadth of her lived experience. Melanie builds sculptural elements to draw the viewer in, inviting connection with her artwork and experience.
